COURSE OVERVIEW
Weekly lessons; Wednesdays 2.30pm to 6.30pm, induction date 30/09/2026.
This recently updated qualification has been developed to enable those working or intending to work in the Further Education and Skills sector (FES) to gain a full teaching qualification by meeting the occupational standards developed and approved by employer representatives and other stakeholders across the FES sector.
This qualification covers all aspects of teaching in the Further Education and Skills (FES) sector.
The course requires attendance at college for a 4-hour class weekly during term time in addition to your teaching practice, plus tutorials and self-study throughout the year to meet assignment deadlines.
Additional commitments:
You will need a subject specialist mentor to support you throughout your course, by observing lessons and meeting for 30 minutes every week in term time.
You will also been allocated a pastoral mentor who will meet you for 30 minutes in term time.
A work placement in a school environment will need to be arranged, by you, in either spring or summer terms, to ensure you can witness a range of different subjects.
FURTHER INFORMATION
You will normally be already employed as a trainer, or lecturer in the FE and Skills sector and have access to at least 250 hours of teaching per year which is the minimum required to do the course.
Entry criteria: (certificates to be available at interview.)
This apprenticeship is suitable for those currently teaching role, ideally who work at least 30 hours per week. You will need to have achieved the Level 3 qualification: Award in Education and Training (formerly PTLLS.)

Plus: GCSEs in maths and English or Level 2 Functional Skill certificates.
Progression is to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS), Advanced Teacher Status (ATS), teaching in post compulsory education, MA/M.Ed qualification.
You will be assessed on eight mandatory units: Teaching my subject, Teachers and teaching, Learners and learning, Professional practice, Effective digital and online pedagogies, Action research, Coaching and mentoring and Managing behaviour.
You will need to log your teaching hours and observations as follows:
· A minimum of 150 teaching hours must be carried out within the principal placement
· A minimum of 100 of these teaching hours in own specialist subject area.
· Record any additional teaching hours undertaken in the second placement (ie outside of the 150 minimum requirement)
· Remote delivery: of 20 hours
· 10 observations (with 1-2 remote delivery.)
Year 1 payment: £3,000, Year 2 payment: £2,000.
Although this course does not qualify for a student loan, payment can be made each year via Direct Debit.
