COURSE OVERVIEW
Biology is one of the three Science GCSE’s we offer at Chichester College
Science is a set of ideas about the material world around us. Within this course you will investigate, observe, experiment and test these ideas and thoughts to support you in building a deep understanding of Biology at Level 2.
You will be taught by an experienced lecturer who will guide and support you through the subject using an exciting mix of practical and theory lessons.
This GCSE course is structured as a one year linear course and will cover the following topics:
- Cell Biology
- Organisation
- Infection and Response
- Bioenergetics
- Homeostasis and Response
- Inheritance, Variation and Evolution
- Ecology
- Key Ideas
FURTHER INFORMATION
You need to be aged 19 or over at the start of the course and will require a grade D or 3 and above from any GCSE science based course or any equivalent qualification. If you do not have a qualification or your qualification is three or more years old, you will need to pass an internal assessment.
All students will be interviewed for the course where eligibility will be checked.
GCSE Biology can lead to further L3 study at Chichester College such as A-Levels or BTECs.
It is also a requirement in order to study for a PGCE, and it is highly useful if you are planning a career in science or wish to study sciences at degree level.
GCSE Biology is assessed through 2 exams in May/June.
Paper 1 covers topics 1-4, while Paper 2 covers topics 5-7. You will be able to discuss with your lecturer whether you wish to take the Foundation or Higher tier paper.
In preparation for the exams you will also be assessed throughout the year on practicals, mock exams and class performance.
Equipment You may wish to purchase a textbook, which can range from £5 – £10, this will be communicated to you at interview.
If you are studying more than one Science GCSE you will be required to purchase a labcoat, we sell these for approx. £16 (subject to change).

You may be required to pay for this course if you are not in receipt of low income or Universal Credit.
