Chichester College Future Builders Take a Step into the Past with Sussex Heritage Trust
Construction students from Chichester College recently picked up their tools to take part in a series of heritage courses held by Sussex Heritage Trust.
Each session, held at Bader College at Herstmonceux Castle, included a one-day ornamental plastering course and was followed by a sash window repair session.
The Chichester College Group was well represented at the sessions, with students from Brighton MET College and Crawley College also in attendance. The day allowed students to work directly with industry experts and master craftspeople.
Every student was able to gain real hands-on experience in traditional techniques, learn more about specialist heritage conservation skills and career pathways within the sector.
This follows on from a two-day session held covering traditional carpentry & joinery techniques, led by Sussex Heritage Trust, and held at the same site as the hit BBC TV show The Repair Shop.
A spokesperson for the Sussex Heritage Trust said:
“It is fantastic to be able to offer Chichester College Group students the opportunity to learn heritage skills directly from industry experts and master craftspeople through our Taster Day Programme.
“These experiences not only inspire the next generation of heritage craftspeople but also showcase valuable career pathways within a sector currently facing a shortage of skilled professionals.
“By encouraging students to develop traditional conservation skills, we can help ensure Sussex’s heritage continues to be protected for years to come.”
