Students’ mile walk raises hundreds for local charity

24 May 2021

Foundation students at Chichester College have raised more than £600 for charity.

The students took part in a sponsored mile-long walk around the college grounds for the charity THINK18 earlier this month as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

Many of the students have been supported by THINK18 during the recent lockdown, with the charity providing different activities and helping them to develop their communication skills to help enhance their learning as well as improve their mental wellbeing during a challenging time.

The students wanted to show their gratitude by organising a sponsored walk, among other fundraising activities.

Vicky Tucker, lecturer in Foundation Programmes at Chichester College, said: “The students had been learning about lots of local charities, but they really wanted to support THINK18 because they have a personal connection to the organisation.

“Many of them have accessed the charity and been supported by it over the recent lockdowns, so it means a lot to them to be able to give something back.

“They all enjoyed taking part in the mile walk around the college. They ran, they walked – even danced their way around the route.

“To date, they’ve raised more than £600 through online sponsorship and donations on the day, and they’re very proud to have raised so much money, which will help Think 18 to continue providing the activities our students enjoy so much.”

Tessa Denison, THINK18 Charity Founder, added: “We were thrilled that the students voted for THINK18, the money raised will buy equipment for our Saturday morning activities we are starting, in June, at the Apuldram Centre in Chichester.

“It is so good to see old and new friendships blossom and the THINK18 community growing for our young adults, 16 – 35 years. As well as running 8 zoom sessions a week and face-to-face activities we are launching THINKOUT, a day service, to get young adults into the community which is starting in September.

“Other events include ‘Around the world challenge’ organised by MENCAP  a ‘camp out’ and ‘party night’ to support these amazing young adults in such difficult times.”To find out more about THINK18, visit
