COURSE OVERVIEW
The STEM Science Gateway allows you to achieve the qualifications you need to gain access to study STEM subjects at Level 3 and above.
The STEM Science Gateway programme is a fast-track 1 year course specially designed for 16-18 year olds yet to achieve 5 GCSE’s, who wish to progress to a level 3 STEM or A level course. The course may suit you if you have been out of education for awhile, were home-schooled or have recently returned from overseas.
The programme is a full-time college course and you will benefit from a pastoral tutor with weekly sessions via our PDP programme as well as regular 1:1 tutorials. The course will help introduce routine and, where possible, you will attend the same subject slots as other Gateway students, allowing you to quickly get to know each other.
The programme comprises of the following:
- GCSE Biology
- GCSE Chemistry
- GCSE Physics
- GCSE Mathematics
- GCSE English
- PDP Sessions
At the end of the course you will have achieved 5 GCSE’s with a STEM subject specialisation.
FURTHER INFORMATION
This course is perfect for you if you are planning on studying a vocational STEM subject (science, computing, engineering or automotive) or would like to progress to A levels.
You must be aged 16-18 and have not yet achieved GCSE’s in English, maths, biology, chemistry and physics.
To be eligible for the programme you must satisfy all the following:
You have not achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English.
You have not achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE maths.
You have not achieved any grade in AQA GCSE Biology (8461)
You have not achieved any grade in AQA GCSE Chemistry (8462)
You have not achieved any grade in AQA GCSE Physics (8463)
All students will be interviewed for suitability for the programme before being accepted on the course.
Please note if you have achieved science grades through a Combined Science programme then this should not affect your eligibility for the course.
The STEM focus from this programme will allow you progress onto our BTEC or T Level L3 qualifications across the STEM department as well as A levels, depending on the grades achieved.
You will be assessed by a series of exams for each of the subjects in May and June.
- GCSE Biology – 2 written exams
- GCSE Chemistry – 2 written exams
- GCSE Physics – 2 written exams
- GCSE English – 2 written exams
- GCSE Maths – 3 written exams (1 non-calculator, 2 calculator)
Throughout the year you will also be informally assessed by in-class topic tests.
There are no formal costs for this qualification as long as you are aged between 16-18 and you have not previously studied on and received a grade for the same GCSE science courses as we offer at Chichester College. You also must not yet have gained a grade 4 in maths or English.
You may wish to purchase textbooks which can range from £5 – £10. Costs of textbooks will be communicated at interview.
You will need to purchase a labcoat for use in the laboratory and for practical work. You can purchase these from the College at approx. £16.50 (subject to change), or online with prices starting at £5.
