A Level English Literature
COURSE OVERVIEW
A Level English Literature covers a range of set texts from different genres and time periods. You will study texts varying from Shakespeare’s Othello to Margaret Atwood’;s The Handmaid’;s Tale. You are required to read texts in a variety of ways and respond critically and creatively, explore connections between texts, establishing links and relationships, use literary terminology and draw on your understanding of different interpretations. Aspects of journalism, writing, rhetorical questions, communication and more specific concept ideas will also be studied.

You need to have achieved 5 GCSEs grade 9/A* – 4/C including English Language and Maths, and a grade 5 or above in English Literature. You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project, prior to enrolment, to prepare you for A Level English Literature.
Careers in Writing, Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, Publishing, Editing, Teaching, Public Relations, Marketing, Archiving ….. there are endless possibilities as the skills required on the course translate into lots of different occupations.
This is a two-year linear A Level where you are examined on the whole syllabus at the end of the second year. Each project is assessed as a portfolio of work. There are 3 exams at the end of your 2 years, ranging from poetry to Drama. 20% of your grade is coursework. To prepare you for external exams, you will carry out a programme of weekly tests, exam style assessments and Formal Progress Points where you will monitor your attendance, how hard you are working and your academic progress. All Year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway that will allow you to progress to Year 2.
You will be required to buy your own textbooks, stationary and any subject-related equipment.
