Motor Vehicle Service & Maintenance Technician (light vehicle) Apprenticeship L3 Standard
COURSE OVERVIEW
A motor vehicle service and maintenance technician services and repairs light vehicles such as cars and vans and works either in dealerships which focus on a particular manufacturer, or in an independent garage which deals with many different makes of vehicles.You will work on all the systems found within the vehicle. The day-to-day work ranges from replacing simple parts through to solving complex faults with the use of diagnostic methods and equipment. The tasks faced are constantly changing, driven by the introduction of ever more complex technologies and diagnostic techniques.

As an apprentice you must be employed in a relevant industry. You would typically be someone who would already have the following qualities: an interest in the way vehicles operate; able to demonstrate general analytical and mechanical skills, a capacity for mechanical reasoning and the potential to research, analyse and solve problems; well organised, methodical and good attention to detail; good spatial awareness; able to work in a team and to communicate well both orally and in writing; cares about delivering excellent service; both internally and externally to colleagues and customers. You should be able to demonstrate an interest in the motor vehicle trade as well as an ability to work in an organised and methodical way to identify and solve problems; also demonstrate an ability to communicate both orally and in writing. You will be interviewed by the college team to establish your suitability and to discuss the apprenticeship. As part of that interview, an aptitude test will be carried out along with English and maths assessments. If you don’t already have the correct level of English and maths you will be required to achieve these at Level 2.
When you complete your apprenticeship you would progress into work as a master technician who is ready to progress and further their knowledge with additional training such as Hybrid vehicles, fuel systems, engine management, diagnostic techniques etc.
You will build a portfolio of evidence for the type of work you carry out at work. You will also be assessed on your knowledge, skills and behaviours that you will develop throughout your apprenticeship. Additionally, you will build a log of off the job training that you must complete as part of your apprenticeship. At the end of your apprenticeship, you will be assessed through an end point assessment (EPA) once you, your employer and we are satisfied you are ready. This consists of; online knowledge tests, a practical skills test and a professional discussion with the assessor. This assessment is carried out by the endpoint assessment organisation who is independent from the college. Before completion you must hold a certificate that meets the EU 2014 F-gas regulation that you will complete as part of your apprenticeship. There will be plenty of opportunities to practice these skills while you are in your apprenticeship, both at college and while at work.
There is no cost to an apprentice.
If you are an employer employing an apprentice over the age 21 (without an EHCP) then you are likely to pay 5% towards the training cost.
If you are an employer with an Apprenticeship levy (i.e. your payroll exceeds £3 Million) then you will pay in full from your levy account.
You will need to come prepared for both classroom and practical settings at college so you will need to bring a pen and paper and you will also need to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as overalls and boots for work in the workshops. All other PPE will be provided by us for use at the college.
