COURSE OVERVIEW
The ESOL Entry 1 Speaking and Listening course is designed for learners who are beginning to develop their spoken English skills. It helps students build confidence in speaking, listening and communicating in everyday situations.
Throughout the course, learners practise using English in a range of familiar contexts, such as introducing themselves, asking for information, talking about daily routines, shopping, travelling and accessing local services. Students also develop their ability to understand spoken English and respond appropriately in simple conversations.
The course focuses on helping learners to:
- Understand and respond to simple spoken English.
- Communicate basic information about themselves and their lives.
- Ask and answer simple questions.
- Follow straightforward instructions and directions.
- Take part in short conversations and discussions.
- Develop pronunciation, vocabulary and confidence when speaking English.
- Use spoken English in everyday situations.
Lessons are practical, supportive and interactive, with plenty of opportunities to practise speaking and listening in pairs, groups and whole-class activities. Students are encouraged to use English as much as possible to develop their confidence and communication skills.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to communicate more effectively in a range of everyday situations and will be prepared to progress to higher ESOL levels.
FURTHER INFORMATION
Apply here if you are 19 or over. There is another course designed for 16-;18-year-olds. If you are interested in applying for an Adult Part-time ESOL course, you will then be contacted with a date and time to come in for an assessment session.
The assessment will take approximately 2 hours -; we will test your grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing skills. This is to help us place you on the correct level for the start of your course. Once the initial assessment has taken place, you will be offered an interview.
You may be required to change levels if we find after initial assessments, a different level of English is more suited to your needs.
After successful completion of the course, we will assess if you are ready to the next award of ESOL. You may be asked to complete a different level for the award in Writing or Reading, depending on the level you come at from your Initial Assessment.
ESOL courses also prepare you to apply for other vocational courses. However, each vocational course will require different levels of English and maths, therefore appointments with the Progression Plus team throughout the year would be advisable to help ensure you are supported throughout your journey with us.
You will complete a Pearson ESOL Skills for Life Entry 1 Speaking and Listening assessment during the course. The assessment is designed to measure your ability to communicate effectively in simple everyday situations.
Throughout the course, your teacher will provide regular feedback and opportunities to practise the skills required for the assessment. This will help you build confidence and prepare for the final assessment.
The assessment may include:
- Taking part in a discussion with other learners.
- Listening to and responding to questions.
- Sharing information, opinions and experiences.
- Demonstrating that you can understand and communicate in spoken English.
Your teacher will explain the assessment process and support you throughout the course to ensure you are fully prepared.
There are no compulsory additional costs for this course. However, a textbook may be recommended to support learning. If so, this will be discussed during induction, including details of any associated costs.
Our ESOL courses are part-time will be 8 hours per week. There will be two groups and each of the groups will be in college either three morning sessions or three afternoon sessions from Monday to Friday. To enrol on this course you must ensure you are available to attend both sessions a week and for the full lesson to help ensure you develop your skills and successfully achieve the English qualification.
Inductions will be during the first week of September which you must be available for, prior to the lessons starting.
