Our range of leisure and hobby courses keeps growing, with even more fun and exciting courses starting throughout 2024.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Further Mathematics will allow you to study more challenging mathematical ideas in preparation for Higher Education. It is particularly relevant if you wish to progress onto degree courses in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computing, Economics, Data Science, Actuarial studies and Operations Research. It can also be studied as preparation for jobs where high powered Maths is applied, or simply for the pleasure of the subject.
You will extend both your Pure Mathematics and your Applications beyond the scope of A level Maths, and you should expect to be challenged, particularly in terms of logic and mathematical problem-solving.
A level Further Mathematics is a stand-alone qualification and a full A level. A level Mathematics must also be taken along with this course.
FURTHER INFORMATION
5 GCSE 9/A* – 4/C Grades including English Language, and a minimum grade B/7 in Maths. This course must be taken alongside A Level Mathematics. You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project prior to enrolment.
Higher Education and careers in Engineering, Computing, Business, Research, Statistics, Accounting, Economics, Medicine, Banking, Data Analysis, Software Design, Investment Analysis and many more. The quantitative analysis and interpretation skills developed in Maths can be applied widely.
This is a two-year linear A Level where you are examined on the whole syllabus at the end of the second year.
Assessment will consist of 3 Final Papers (consisting of 2 Further Pure Maths papers and 1 Application of Mathematics Options paper)
To prepare you for external exams, you will carry out a programme of weekly independent study, exam-style assessments and four Formal Progress Points during which we will monitor your attendance, how hard you are working and your academic progress. All Year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway which is dependent on achievement during your Formal Progress Points. If a high enough level is achieved, you will progress to Year 2.
Further Mathematics requires several textbooks and a graphical calculator (Recommended Casio CG-50 which can be bought at a discount through the college)
Further Maths is one of the more expensive classes, however if this is a concern then Student Finance at the college can almost certainly assist with the cost and there is a set of older calculators which can be leant to students.
Textbooks for the 2 years are:
Further Maths Pure Year 1 – £20
Further Maths Pure Year 2 – £20
and 2 of the following 3 options
Further Maths – Mechanics – £25
Further Maths – Statistics – £25
Further Maths – Discrete – £25
Calculator: Casio CG-50 – £70 (no tax through the college)
Total: £40 + £50 (minimum of 2 options) + £70 = £160 over 2 years.
