COURSE OVERVIEW
Throughout this 2-year course you will develop an understanding of, and the ability to apply, the fundamental principles of computing. You will also be able to analyse problems through practical experience including writing programs.
During the course, you will learn mathematical skills related to algebra, algorithms, and number bases and you will develop the ability to evaluate the individual, social, legal, and cultural opportunities and risks of digital technology.
FURTHER INFORMATION
5 GCSEs at grade 4/C or above including English Language and a B/6 in Maths. It is essential that you have either 4/C GCSE Computer Science or experience using High Level programming languages (e.g. Python. C#). You will also be required to complete a GCSE to A Level Transition Project prior to enrolment.
There are many options for further learning, employment or an apprenticeship. Careers you may wish to explore include Software Development, Systems Analysis, Cyber Security, Network Engineering or Website Designer. You will also develop useful skills in thinking creatively, analytically, logically and critically.
This is a two-year linear A Level where you are examined on the whole syllabus at the end of the second year. Each project is assessed as a portfolio of work. At the end of Year 2 there will be 2 written exams, each lasting 2.5 hours and worth 40% of the final grade. Paper 1 includes writing, adapting &/or extending programs in an electronic document that will be provided by the exam board. The computing practical project is worth 20%. To prepare you for external exams, you will carry out a programme of weekly tests, exam style assessments and Formal Progress Points where you will monitor your attendance, how hard you are working and your academic progress. All Year 1 students will progress through a Year 1 Gateway that will allow you to progress to Year 2.
You will be required to buy your own textbooks, stationary and any subject-related equipment.
