Our range of leisure and hobby courses keeps growing, with even more fun and exciting courses starting throughout 2025.
COURSE OVERVIEW
The L3 Games Production and Esports course is a new course to replace the previous L3 BTEC in Esports. This new course allows us to deliver the best bits from esports, and bring in engaging games design and development elements too.
The first year of the course will focus on:
- Skills and Strategies
- Game Design Principle and Theory
- Career Pathways and Progression within Gaming and Esports
- Analysis and Coaching
- Game Design and Development
- Final Major Project (FMP)
The FMP is a project that calls upon all the learning throughout the year to plan and execute a project based on a brief. It runs from February to June and is the graded portion of the course.
Teaching of the content occurs between September and February, with assessments set to gauge current working level and areas for improvement.
Throughout the year, learners will be developing their knowledge in many key areas, which includes video production, audio/visual production, editing and game development. All work will be uploaded to their own personal online portfolio, which will show off their skills.
FURTHER INFORMATION
The requirements for the course are 5 GCSE grades at 4 or above, which must include Maths and English.
Successful completion of the first year will open up progression onto the second year of the programme. The second year expands on offerings from the first year, but also introduces a lot of brand new content.
Assessments will be carried out in 2 ways: informal and formal.
Informal – These will be assessments set across all units throughout the teaching portion of the course. They are not graded, but are important as they provide learners with an indication of what level they are working at, and how they can develop when it comes to their FMP. All work produced will also be placed into their online portfolio.
Formal – This is the official assessment carried out during the FMP, and is graded. It will be based on work produced and recorded observations throughout the FMP process.
There are no initial costs for the course. All equipment that the learners could need, will be provided by the college. However, it would be wise to invest in a computer capable of video editing. If you are unsure what to go for, the teaching staff can advise.
Work experience is a key fundamental core to this course, and as such, every learner is expected to undertake a minimum of 30 hours work outside of the college. This would ideally be within a related industry; however, work experience of a transferable skill set would also be accepted following a discussion at interview. It is therefore advisable to attempt to secure your work placement for the academic year following acceptance onto the course.
