It’s time to explore our campus to find out about studying at Chichester College.
Why choose this course?
It is suitable if you want to: The course covers areas such as gas safety, tightness testing, unsafe situations, gas appliances, flues, combustion and relevant procedures. If you’re completely new to the gas industry, you will need to have completed a Manged Learning Programme that provides the underpinning knowledge and practical experience needed before or alongside the ACS assessments. Once you have CCN1, you can then look at additional qualifications such as CENWAT (central heating boilers and water heaters), CKR1 (cookers) and HTR1 (fires), depending on the type of work you want to do. Completing CCN1 doesn’t by itself make you Gas Safe registered. You need the appropriate qualifications/categories and then need to meet the requirements for Gas Safe registration.
Further information
The CCN1 Initial Course is mainly for people who want to enter the domestic gas industry and gain the core gas qualification needed to progress towards working as a domestic gas engineer.
- Gas safety legislation – your responsibilities when working with gas and the relevant regulations.
- Gas appliances – how domestic gas appliances work and the safety requirements that apply to them
- Gas tightness testing – how to test an installation for gas leaks and confirm it is safe.
- Gas safety checks – carrying out the required checks on domestic gas installations.
- Flues and ventilation – understanding ventilation requirements and checking that combustion products can safely escape.
- Combustion and carbon monoxide – understanding combustion, recognising signs of incomplete combustion and the dangers of CO.
- Gas pressures and measurements – using appropriate equipment to measure and check gas pressures
- Installation pipework – understanding requirements for domestic gas pipework and connections
- Testing equipment – correctly using equipment such as a gas analyser and manometer where required
- Documentation – completing relevant gas safety records and paperwork correctly.
After completing CCN1 Initial, you can build on it with additional ACS gas qualifications. These allow you to work on specific types of domestic gas appliances and broaden your scope.
- CENWAT – Domestic central heating boilers and water heaters. This is a common next step if you want to work on boilers.
- CKR1 – Domestic gas cookers.
- HTR1 – Domestic gas fires
You don’t necessarily need to take all of these. The ones you choose depend on the type of gas work you want to do.
For a CCN1 Initial Course, you’ll be taught through a combination of classroom theory, demonstrations and hands-on practical training.
