COURSE OVERVIEW
The ISTD DTCD is for learners 18+ wishing to start a career as a professional dance teacher. It awards 52 credits at Level 4 on the Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF) in England and the Credit and Qualifications Framework in Wales (CQFW) thus providing employers with evidence of Level 4 initial dance teacher training. The skills acquired will equip graduates with knowledge of structuring lessons, safe practice, child development, implementation of creative tasks and an understanding of individual participants. It is suitable for a range of learners who are interested in teaching dance in a community setting including:
- students currently completing a dance degree or vocational dance training
- dance graduates
- those currently assisting dance classes in a community setting
The ISTD’s core vision is to enable dance education for all. Both the ISTD and Chichester College champion diversity by providing inclusive study opportunities that are focused on ensuring that the wider dance teaching community is well-trained, safe and knowledgeable.
The course is part time – 5 hours a week for 1 year. For those wishing to improve their practical skills there is an optional additional 6 hours of practical classes a week for 1 year.
FURTHER INFORMATION
You will be invited to an interview/audition prior to being accepted on the course. Requirements include:
- Minimum age 18 years
- Dance knowledge and experience, e.g. dance training for a number of years, performing or assisting dance teachers
- Holding an enhanced DBS check
- Achieving GCSE English or equivalent (recommended)
Certificates for the DTCD will be issued on successful completion of all units. On achieving the DTCD graduates will hold a regulated dance teaching qualification that demonstrates a high level of understanding of both the theoretical and practical responsibilities and competencies required of a community dance teacher. Graduates will be invited to become affiliate members of the ISTD.
Holders of the DTCD can receive exemptions for Units 1, 2 and 5 of the ISTD’s Diploma in Dance Education (DDE) should they wish to progress to this qualification at a later date. It also provides a pathway onto the ISTD Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy (DDP). Graduates from the DDP are eligible to apply for QTLS training if they wish to teach dance in formal education setting working with students age 14+.
The DTCD consists of 3 units. You will complete worksheets, lesson plans and schemes of work and teaching practice that will be assessed initially by your college tutors. You will receive regular feedback to help you improve the quality of your work prior to your final assessments all of which are marked by the ISTD and are graded using a Pass/Fail system.
- Unit 1: Preparing for Safe Teaching Practice. This unit covers much of the essential information that a dance teacher requires in order to maintain professional conduct and to keep themselves and others safe.
- Unit 2: Applied Teaching Practice. This unit is designed to develop practical understanding of dance teaching in community setting and how to meet the needs of individual participants.
- Unit 5: Child Development. Through this unit students will gain an understanding of key developmental stages, how to identify typical and atypical development and apply appropriate strategies for inclusivity and diversity in dance classes.

Additional practical classes are available in ballet, tap, contemporary and jazz. Students will also have the opportunity to observe and assist in a variety of dance classes prior to undertaking their own teaching practice.
