COURSE OVERVIEW
The ESOL Level 2 Reading course is designed for learners who wish to develop high-level reading skills for employment, further education and everyday life in the UK. It is suitable for students who are confident readers and want to improve their ability to understand, analyse and evaluate a wide range of complex texts.
Throughout the course, learners will work with a variety of authentic materials, including articles, reports, reviews, webpages, workplace documents and academic texts. Students will develop the skills needed to interpret information, evaluate arguments and understand how writers use language to influence their readers.
The course focuses on helping learners to:
- Understand detailed information, ideas and opinions in complex texts.
- Analyse how language and structure are used to achieve a purpose.
- Identify bias, viewpoint and persuasive techniques.
- Evaluate arguments and evidence presented by writers.
- Compare and synthesise information from multiple sources.
- Infer meaning and understand implied messages.
- Develop advanced vocabulary and reading strategies for work, study and everyday life.
Lessons are challenging, engaging and designed to help learners apply their reading skills in realistic contexts. Students will also prepare for the Level 2 Reading assessment and develop the skills needed for further study, vocational training and employment opportunities.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to read critically, evaluate information effectively and engage confidently with a wide range of complex texts.
FURTHER INFORMATION
Apply here if you are 19 or over. There is another course designed for 16-;18-year-olds. If you are interested in applying for an Adult Part-time ESOL course, you will then be contacted with a date and time to come in for an assessment session.
The assessment will take approximately 2 hours -; we will test your grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing skills. This is to help us place you on the correct level for the start of your course. Once the initial assessment has taken place, you will be offered an interview.
You may be required to change levels if we find after initial assessments, a different level of English is more suited to your needs.
After successful completion of the course, we will assess if you are ready to move up to the next level of ESOL. ESOL courses also prepare you to apply for other vocational courses. However, each vocational course will require different levels of English and maths, therefore appointments with the Progression Plus team throughout the year would be advisable to help ensure you are supported throughout your journey with us.
You will complete a Pearson ESOL Skills for Life Level 2 Reading assessment at the end of the course. The assessment is designed to measure your ability to understand, analyse and evaluate information, ideas and opinions from a range of complex texts.
Throughout the course, your teacher will monitor your progress, provide feedback and give you regular opportunities to practise the skills required for the assessment.
The assessment may include tasks such as:
- Reading and understanding a variety of complex texts.
- Identifying explicit and implicit meaning.
- Analysing how writers use language and structure.
- Evaluating arguments, opinions and evidence.
- Identifying bias, purpose and audience.
- Comparing and synthesising information from different sources.
- Demonstrating understanding through a range of question types.
Your teacher will support you throughout the course and ensure you are fully prepared for the assessment.
There are no compulsory additional costs for this course. However, a textbook may be recommended to support learning. If so, this will be discussed during induction, including details of any associated costs.
Our ESOL courses are part-time will be 8 hours per week. There will be two groups and each of the groups will be in college either three morning sessions or three afternoon sessions from Monday to Friday. To enrol on this course you must ensure you are available to attend both sessions a week and for the full lesson to help ensure you develop your skills and successfully achieve the English qualification.
Inductions will be during the first week of September which you must be available for, prior to the lessons starting.
