COURSE OVERVIEW
The ESOL Level 1 Speaking and Listening course is designed for learners who want to develop their spoken English skills for everyday life, employment and further study. It is suitable for students who can already communicate in a range of familiar situations and are ready to develop greater confidence, fluency and accuracy.
Throughout the course, learners take part in discussions, presentations and a variety of communication activities that encourage them to express ideas clearly and interact effectively with others. Students develop their ability to communicate in both formal and informal situations while improving their listening skills and spoken language.
The course focuses on helping learners to:
- Communicate confidently and effectively in a range of situations.
- Express ideas, opinions and viewpoints clearly.
- Take an active role in discussions and group activities.
- Listen carefully and respond appropriately to others.
- Adapt language to suit different audiences and purposes.
- Develop pronunciation, fluency and spoken accuracy.
- Build communication skills for work, study and everyday life.
Lessons are interactive and practical, providing learners with regular opportunities to develop their speaking and listening skills through discussions, collaborative tasks, presentations and real-life scenarios.
By the end of the course, learners will be able to communicate confidently in a variety of contexts and will be prepared to progress to Level 2 ESOL courses or other educational and employment opportunities.
FURTHER INFORMATION
Apply here if you are 19 or over. There is another course designed for 16-;18-year-olds. If you are interested in applying for an Adult Part-time ESOL course, you will then be contacted with a date and time to come in for an assessment session.
The assessment will take approximately 2 hours -; we will test your grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing skills. This is to help us place you on the correct level for the start of your course. Once the initial assessment has taken place, you will be offered an interview.
You may be required to change levels if we find after initial assessments, a different level of English is more suited to your needs.
After successful completion of the course, we will assess if you are ready to the next award of ESOL. You may be asked to complete a different level for the award in Writing or Reading, depending on the level you come at from your Initial Assessment.
ESOL courses also prepare you to apply for other vocational courses. However, each vocational course will require different levels of English and maths, therefore appointments with the Progression Plus team throughout the year would be advisable to help ensure you are supported throughout your journey with us.
You will complete a Pearson ESOL Skills for Life Level 1 Speaking and Listening assessment during the course. The assessment is designed to measure your ability to communicate effectively, participate in discussions and respond appropriately to others in spoken English.
Throughout the course, your teacher will provide regular feedback and opportunities to practise the skills required for the assessment. This will help you build confidence and prepare for the final assessment.
The assessment may include:
- Taking part in a discussion with other learners.
- Contributing relevant ideas, opinions and information.
- Listening carefully and responding appropriately to others.
- Demonstrating effective communication and interaction skills.
- Using spoken English appropriately for the purpose and audience.
Your teacher will explain the assessment process and support you throughout the course to ensure you are fully prepared.
There are no compulsory additional costs for this course. However, a textbook may be recommended to support learning. If so, this will be discussed during induction, including details of any associated costs.
Our ESOL courses are part-time will be 8 hours per week. There will be two groups and each of the groups will be in college either three morning sessions or three afternoon sessions from Monday to Friday. To enrol on this course you must ensure you are available to attend both sessions a week and for the full lesson to help ensure you develop your skills and successfully achieve the English qualification.
Inductions will be during the first week of September which you must be available for, prior to the lessons starting.
