Composites Technician Apprenticeship L3 Standard
COURSE OVERVIEW
Composites manufacture is the combining of materials to form a lighter and stronger rigid structure as an alternative to metal. These lightweight rigid structures are essential in the Aerospace, Automotive, Marine and Renewables industries and are becoming increasingly important in the Oil & Gas, Construction and Rail sectors. The composite industry therefore has an increasing requirement for skilled employees.
A Composites Technician employed within a Composites Manufacturing environment will find themselves at the heart of cutting edge technologies using state of the art equipment and will become a skilled resource that will be an enabler for manufacturing technologies, processes and practices.

As an apprentice you must be employed in a relevant industry. A Composites Technician is engaged in a variety of processes in the production and creation of materials and components that are used in a range of applications including but not limited to: airplanes, cars, boats, turbine blades, oil & gas rigs, bridges, trains and satellites. They provide specialised knowledge and skills that support manufacturing programmes and projects and may be deployed in the areas of design, tooling, moulding, lay-up, curing, machining, inspection, testing, repair and material production. As the Technician grows in competence and expertise, other areas of composites technology such as automated manufacture development, preform technologies, processing technologies, validation and post processing, may form part of their role and responsibility.You will be interviewed by the college team to establish your suitability and to discuss the apprenticeship. As part of that interview, an aptitude test will be carried out along with English and maths assessments.
Once you have completed your apprenticeship you can work in a number of composite based industries such as; Composites Designer, Composites Tool-Maker, Composites Laminator, Composites Inspector, Composites Repairer, Composite Materials Technician.
You will build a portfolio of evidence for the type of work you carryout at work. You will also be assessed on your knowledge, skills and behaviours that you will develop throughout your apprenticeship. Additionally you will build a log of off the job training that you must complete as part of your apprenticeship.At the end of your apprenticeship you will be assessed through an end point assessment (EPA) once you, your employer and we are satisfied you are ready.This consists of; online knowledge tests, a practical skills test and a professional discussion with the assessor. This assessment is carried out by the endpoint assessment organisation who is independent from the college.If you don’t already have the correct level of English and maths you will be required to achieve these at Level 2.There will be plenty of opportunities to practice these skills while you are in your apprenticeship, both at college and while at work
There is no cost to an apprentice.
If you are an employer employing an apprentice over the age 21 (without an EHCP) then you are likely to pay 5% towards the training cost.
If you are an employer with an Apprenticeship levy (i.e. your payroll exceeds £3 Million) then you will pay in full from your levy account
You will need to come prepared for both classroom and practical settings at college so you will need to bring a pen and paper and you will also need to provide your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as overalls and boots for work in the workshops. All other PPE will be provided by us for use at the college.
