COURSE OVERVIEW
The course is aimed for learners with prior Engineering knowledge or who are progressing from the City & Guilds Level 1 Engineering course. The Level 2 Diploma consists of two pathways; one predominately in the Workshop and Manufacturing. The second aimed at doing a Technician route.
Pathway A: Workshop Manufacturing.
Units include – Fabrication, Welding (TIG), Machining and CAD -; CNC (Computer Numerical Control).
Pathway B: Technician:
Units included -; Electronics, Hydraulics & Pneumatics, Machine Maintenance and CAD -; CNC.
Core Theory is included in both Pathways such as Health & Safety, Material Knowledge, Science and Maths.
FURTHER INFORMATION
This is a progressive course where you will require the following:
- Learners who are progressing form the City & Guilds 2850-10 Level 1 Certificate in Engineering (or equivalent course) with a minimum Pass including ALL units.
- Mature learners can be assessed based upon any previous experience/employment in a technical background.
- GCSE’;s of 4/C & above in Maths & English would also be required.
- Learners may be subject to a College interview with the course Study Programme Leader which may include an aptitude test carried out at time of interview.
There will be the option to progress on to the Vocational Level 3 Diploma in Engineering.
Another pathway can be the Apprenticeship route.
Academic Level 3 routes include the BTEC, T Level or Access.
Theory -; A set of Gola Exams (Global Online Assessments). Written knowledge tests and practical assessments and work write ups (self-evaluation or own work).
Practical – With the City & Guilds qualification, practical elements are assessed by the creation of a test piece is under controlled conditions which is submitted for assessment alongside planning paperwork. Core units are assessed via an online assessment (GOLA).
Students build a comprehensive portfolio which will be assessed and externally verified by the awarding bodies.
This course attracts government funding for most eligible 16-;19-year-olds which covers the core tuition fees. Fee remission may also be available under certain other circumstances. An additional mandatory supplement fee of ÂŁ250.00 (2025/26 fee) is payable prior to enrolment which goes toward the cost of safety equipment tools and training resources.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This is given to students in the first weeks of the course allowing students to fully participate in the practical components of the course, in accordance with the relevant Health and Safety regulations. The PPE becomes the student’;s property upon completion of the course.

An important part of all vocational courses at Chichester College is work experience. Students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 hours (tbc) of work experience over the period of the course. This will give invaluable experience of working life, and can lead to increased employment opportunities.
