About the course

This is an exciting and new qualification for construction students to learn about Building Services Enginnering at a level 3 standard.

This course will introduce you to the professional roles in industry whilst specialising in a skilled trade area. (Electrical installation or  Plumbing) This course is an alternative to traditional A level routes that enables you to access Higher Apprenticeships or University

You will cover core content related to the construction sector and choose an occupational specialism - this can be either Electrical installation or plumbing.  

Ultimately this course is designed for students who want to go on to careers such as: Building manager, Building services engineering technician, Electrician, Gas fitter, Plumbing and heating engineer or specialist technical design.

Your learning will cover a broad range of topics and practical skills. The learning is a mixture of practical and theory, so that you can develop your skills in research, problem solving, solution-development, communication and collaboration. You will also further develop your English, Maths and introduce you to sector related Digital skills.

Your practical learning will be designed so that you develop your experience with your occupational specialism.

The College also has a dedicated team of industrial placement officers who will help you organise industry placement with employers, so that you can get real-world experience as part of your qualification. It would be beneficial if you can come to us with an employer who will support you on this journey.

The core content covers a whole range of topics related to the industry.  

  • Health and safety in construction
  • Construction science, design, sustainability and measurement principles
  • Construction & the built environment industry
  • Building technology principles
  • Information and data principles
  • Relationship management in construction
  • Digital technology in construction
  • Commercial/business principles in construction

Occupational Specialism

You will choose one occupational specialism from the building services route. The contents of the occupational specialisms below is currently under development and may be subject to change. Our construction department has a T Level Lead for Building Services and this member of the team has responsibility to lead on the delivery of this qualification. More information will appear on our website over the next few months.


The electrical specialism is likely to cover:

  • Health and safety practices
  • Tools, materials and equipment used to complete tasks
  • Systems and products
  • Analysing and using information
  • Installing, commissioning, and decommissioning
  • Maintaining electrical and electronic equipment systems


 The plumbing specialism is likely to cover:

  • Fundamental Health & Safety practices associated with carrying out plumbing work.
  • Plumbing tools and equipment
  • Pipework materials, installation methods and jointing processes.
  • Plumbing systems and their purpose
  • Plumbing science
  • Principles of measurement and marking out components and pipework

Industry Placement 

The T Level will include a minimum of 315 hours of learning on industry placement (Up to 35 hours of this will be a digital project). Our Industrial Placement Officers will help you link-up with an employer and complete placements relevant to the qualification. Following your application, a member of the admissions team will review your application with a view to arranging an interview for you with a member of the Construction department.

If you then receive an offer from us and you accept that offer, we will invite you to attend a further one hour session with the one of the T Level study programme leaders in the department. This will help you learn more about the course and the expectations of the T Level.

Entry requirements

  • GCSEs: You will need a minimum of Maths and English Language at grade 5, and 3 GCSEs above 4, ideally including a science or design subject.
  • Age: you will ned to aged 16-18 at the start of your qualification.
  • Those who have completed a Level 2 Diploma in a relevant subject may also apply

In your first year you will be assessed by an exam and an employer set project. This will cover the core topics relating to on-site construction or building services.

In you second year your occupational specialism is assessed through a practical assignment.

There is £50 supplement to cover: Material costs, Specialist software licences and other consumables. (Payable online before enrolment. Support with this may be available through applying for a bursary on the CCG website.)

You will need to supply your own safety boots and weather appropriate clothes for workshop lessons and site visits.

This technical qualification focuses on the development of knowledge and skills needed for working in the building services industry, either in the plumbing or electrical trade. There are several routes that you could take at the end of the two years:  


You could enter employment and complete an apprenticeship standard. This would allow you to complete some of the more technical areas & performance units in your trade, so that you can become vocationally competent in the future. At Chichester College we offer: 

  • Plumbing & Domestic Heating Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard
  • Installation Electrician / Maintenance Electrician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard


Completing the T Level will allow a route into industry where you can further develop your skills and knowledge.

Higher Education:  

  • You could progress onto a Level 4 qualification. At Chichester College we offer a Higher National Certificate in Construction. 
  • The T Level qualification is recognised by university admissions and will give you UCAS points. You may want to pursue advanced study with the next step being a foundation degree or university degree.

You will be required to be available for college activities for 5 days per week (Including industry placement, self study and college attendance). Self-study is an important part in your learning and progression. To allow you to complete remote learning and assignments you will have access to MS Teams. 

Alongside the T Level qualification, you will complete at least 45 days or 9 weeks' worth of industry placement.


 Do not book holidays in term time.
