College sleepout raises life changing funds to support homeless charity

5 May 2022

As part of their Advanced Life Learning sessions, additional support students have been pitching to their lecturers how they could make a difference within their local communities.

In the weeks leading up to the sleepout, that took place last month (20th April), the

students were aware of the visible rise in those sleeping rough in the area and began some research into the needs of rough sleepers and what support there was available locally.

After researching into the demanding work of Stonepillow, students began gathering as much cardboard as they can in order to build the perfect shelters to support their fundraiser.

The sleepout not only raised an incredible £340 for the charity but also allowed the students and lecturers to experience a glimpse of the difficulties homeless people face.

Clare Franklin, Additional support lecturer, said: “This was particularly challenging for our students, many of whom are on the Autistic Spectrum or have some difficulty with social interaction, they may have sensory issues or find changes in their routine very difficult to manage but they were determined to give it a go.

“We are incredibly proud of each and every student and staff member who supported the sleepout.”
