Chichester College students to take on Student Motorsport Challenge

Students from Chichester College are taking part in the Student Motorsport Challenge.

The project launched last month, with a visit from JP Latham, founder of Student Motorsport. He visited the college and delivered a full spec race car to the students.

Taking part in the Motorsport Challenge will offer students on motorsport courses with a fantastic opportunity to learn and compete in a professional motorsport environment, as well as providing them with the chance to meet and network with industry experts.

They will be taking part in race days across the country, working with professional drivers and mechanics.

At the launch of the project, students investigated the full spec race car and were able to look at differences between this and the car that they will transform for the competition. They tried their hand at constructing a roll cage and looked at the parts that they have received to transform their donor car – a Citroen C1 – into a race-ready car!

Dan Turner, motorsport lecturer at Chichester College, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for our students to gain real, hands-on industry experience and I know they are raring to go.

“Spending the day with JP and his team was a great way to launch this project, and it will prove invaluable to them.”

The Motorsport Challenge will also see students from other areas of the college getting involved, with media students documenting the project at each stage.

Helen Loftus, interim principal at Chichester College, added: “This is a real cross-college opportunity and it’s great to see so many students will be able to benefit and get some first-hand experience.

“To be able to say they have been involved with a project like this one – whether working in the pit team at races or producing media content, will add to their CVs and improve their future employment or further study prospects.”
