COURSE OVERVIEW
As an industry, Film and Gaming is financially the biggest in the entertainments world. The Creative Sound Design course focusses on the audio aspect of media.
The course gives you a unique insight into this side of the industry that provides some of the biggest impacts and wow moments in a film or game, namely the Creative Sound Design and Music Production. You will explore those different roles and gain a variety of experiences in these roles such as:
Music Creators: using a Digital Audio Workstation you will learn how to write, mix and produce original music, as well how to sync it to the visuals. This is taught from the ground up so prior experience is not essential.
Foley Artist and Creative Sound Designer: you will learn to create sound effects either by using synthesisers and samplers or by recording and manipulating sounds in the recording studio.
Recording and Mixing Engineer: in the studio, you will learn to set up microphones to capture and create sounds. You will then learn how to edit and mix the music, sound effects and dialogue so that the audience becomes immersed in the experience.
It will test your creativity to find solutions to problems that occur during your project work. There are some opportunities to work and collaborate with Animation and Creative Media students to produce great products. This is a great time to start thinking about a creative career in an expanding industry.

You will need 5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths.
This is a course is open to you if you have a keen interest in all things Sound and Music within Film and Gaming, and want to pursue a career in the Creative Industries.
It is an ideal opportunity for Songwriters, Composers or EDM Producers who are looking for alternative ways to break into a Creative Industry.
If you have no prior experience of working in sound or music, you are still encouraged to come and explore the possibilities in an ever growing industry.
This course is ideal for you if you want to progress on to year 2, where you will dive deeper into the editing and integration of sound to film and gaming.
From there, you can look to progress on to Higher Education either in Creative Sound Design, Creative Media or Music Composition.
Alternatively, you can look for an apprenticeships or employment following this course.
The ethos of the course is about your learning journey and how you capture this. There are no formal exams or traditional based modular course work.
By working this way, we are able to encourage and enable confidence building, development of skills and the ability to self-reflect in order to inform your own development. All of the Assessments are project based and will be based on ‘Real World’; situations. You will be required to show research and how you apply it context to the project (practically), followed by reflecting on how well the research had helped you.
For each year, in Terms One and Two, you will be working on projects that explore the different skills sets. It is mixture of Tutor led delivery and student focus research. This is all then capture through Blogging and Vlogging as we want you to create a portfolios of work.
Term Three is the FMP (Final Major Project), where you will have the opportunity to choose a project topic of your choice (Year One is a Collaborative project, Year Two can be either a Collaborative or Individual project).
The project will need to be agreed with the Tutors to ensure that it will yield suitable results and to enable you to achieve the highest grades.
There are no additional costs for this course. However, we do recommend in investing in a pair of decent headphones for critical listening (Beyer Dynamic, AKG, Sennheiser) and a portal USB Hard Drive (7200rpm speed or Solid State Drive) to save and back up projects.
We will have guest speakers and other creators coming in to give talks and share their experiences with you, as well as inviting companies who produce technology for the production of sound.
