COURSE OVERVIEW
You will cover a range of graphics and photography skills through this exciting and varied course, including: poster design / typography/ illustration / publishing / magazine design / print media / location, studio and creative photography / branding / packaging / logos. You will explore a variety of materials, techniques and processes through assignment work. You will develop visual language, research skills and contextual understanding which will inform your own work. Your course work will be exhibited regularly culminating with the Final Major Project of the year which is open to the public.
You will learn about studio lighting and digital camera functions, the outcomes of which will feed into your graphic design products and can also be used as stand alone photography.
You will make new friends and will seek feedback on your ideas through informal discussion along with formal presentations. There will be enrichment trips to London and Brighton galleries and exhibitions, and primary research gathering trips throughout the year.
As part of further professional development, Work Experience (WEX) will be will be undertaken in both year 1 and 2. We currently have collaborative links with Solent University.
We have also worked with Pan’artisan bread Company, MR2 Car Wrap & The Novium Museum.
FURTHER INFORMATION
You will need either:
- 5 GCSEs at grades 4 or above including English, maths and art
- An equivalent such as a L2 Diploma in Art and Design at grade merit or above and suitable progress in English and maths
You will also need a creative portfolio of work that demonstrates your enthusiasm for the subject, including examples of graphic design and creativity.
The course is primarily designed to aid your progression into university in areas like graphic design, fashion & product photography etc, illustration, advertising, web design, motion graphics, marketing or other related creative subjects.
During your Year 1 Diploma there are 9 units in total.
Units 1-7 & 9 carry only a Pass grade and are designed to equip you with the necessary skills and understanding ready for the Final Major Project, which carries your grade for the year as either a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Year 1 grades attract UCAS tariff points: Pass = 36, Merit = 60, Distinction =84
If you continue to the Year 2 Extended Diploma, there are 4 units in year 2 ending with a longer duration project through which you are able to explore and develop your own interests within the graphics and photography.
Year 2 grades attract UCAS tariff points: Pass = 72, Merit = 120 Distinction = 168
UCAS tariff points allow you to progress to university.
