Sewing for Advanced Beginners

COURSE OVERVIEW

Learn how to make garments using commercial sewing patterns. This course is aimed at sewers who have completed a beginners dressmaking and are comfortable using a sewing machine.

The course will take you through the basics of garment making including: taking personal measurements, selecting and cutting the correct size simple pattern, cutting out fabric, following and understanding commercial pattern instructions, sewing basic/common dressmaking techniques to the completion of a simple garment (latter time dependent). Sewing machines and overlockers are available to use at the college, although you may find it useful to have your own sewing machine to continue your garment and practice sewing techniques at home. By the end of the course you will be able to: Use a sewing machine with confidence, including: threading up, changing bobbins, adjusting the settings, changing and using different feet, e.g. zip, zig zag. Follow a commercial sewing pattern, including: using and understanding technical terms and language, ‘read’; and understand pattern information and markings. Select suitable fabric for style and cut out correctly according to pattern information. Demonstrate a range of sewing techniques (dependent on pattern chosen) which could include: sewing seams, pockets, inserting zips, sewing hems Create a wearable garment.
