COURSE OVERVIEW
Our new Access to HE Diploma (Forensic Science) is designed to teach students how the world of Forensic Science works. This is a full-time Level 3 course over 2 years for 16-18 year olds and ends with a qualification equivalent to 3 A-levels.
This course will seek to help you develop yourself as an independent, confident individual and will look to give you skills that can be used for your future pathway, as well as practical skills in real world forensic science.
The Forensic Science pathway is targeted at those wanting to move on to:
· Crime Scene Investigator/SOCO roles
· Police Careers -; Police or Detective apprenticeships
· Science/Civilian specialist roles
· University/HE tracks
· Technician roles
You will also be developing a wide range of academic study skills on the course, from essay writing to using ICT, leading you towards the Independent Academic Study unit, where you will have the chance generate your own final project investigating something of your choice.
We have developed this course with links to a range of universities and with input from forensic specialists to ensure relevance and applicability to this exciting and complex field.
FURTHER INFORMATION
All learners must be 16-18 years old on the 1st of September and will need to have achieved a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9-4, which includes English Language and Maths and all Sciences (combined or triple).
You must also pass an interview to be offered a place.
There will be a tutorial/PDP program alongside this course, with students also expected to complete 30 hours per year of relevant work experience.
Successful completion of this course will allow you to enter most institutes of Higher Education, including HNC, HND & Degree pathways, as well as relevant apprenticeship paths.
The courses are focussed to help progression on your chosen career path, whilst allowing you to explore science.
You will be fully supported with your university applications in your second year, by your course team and the College’;s Progression Plus team. This will include a focussed workshops, drop-ins with the Progression Plus team, personalised feedback on your personal statement, and a unique academic reference provided by your course leader.
The goal of this course is to provide you with a full range of the assessments that you will face at university, so we assess with a mixture of exams, workbooks, practical assessments, presentations and essays. The assessment schedule is fairly busy, but also fairly diverse.
The course is credit based and each unit has a number of credits attached to it; 45 of the 60 credits will be attached to graded units on a Pass, Merit, Distinction basis.
Every assignment issued will have a set deadline that needs to be met and there will be a one to one or sometimes small group tutorial opportunities before submission. These tutorials should be prepared for by producing a plan for the assignment, noting any questions you need answering and where appropriate bringing some draft work that can be reviewed by the subject lecturer.
