COURSE OVERVIEW
The purpose and aim of the IMI Level 4 Certificate in Advanced Automotive Studies is to offer individuals, who are experienced technicians in the automotive industry, the opportunity to develop their knowledge of advanced vehicle technologies.
The training provided by this course will help you develop effective routines, leading to a correct diagnosis which can reduce overall repair times.
Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to be trained on and use up-to-date diagnostic equipment including, scan-tools and VCI’;s, oscilloscopes and dedicated test equipment.
FURTHER INFORMATION
The typical candidate for this qualification will be 19 years plus, working in industry and will hold a Level 3 automotive technical qualification and/or an Advanced Apprenticeship. However, this course is particularly suited to mature technicians with considerable motor vehicle diagnostic/repair experience that may not necessarily have followed a conventional training route.
Candidates should have experience of diagnosing and rectifying faults on a wide range of vehicle systems, including electrical system operations.
Following the successful completion of this course, you may wish to undertake some stand alone automotive modules, including:
- Automotive Electrical Fundamentals
- Electrical Testing DMM and Scope
- Automotive Spark Ignition Systems
- Electronic fuel injection
- Engine Management
- OBD and Diagnosis
- Exhaust and combustion analysis
- F-gas refrigerant handling
- IMI level 1 EV/Hybrid vehicle awareness
- IMI Level 3 EV/Hybrid vehicle repair and replacement
Candidates will demonstrate their knowledge and skills by successfully completing IMI set written assignments and practical tasks covering required pathway units described below:

Advanced internal combustion engine technology (engine management system operation and diagnosis, performance enhancements and limitations) – assessed unit AAS1 – practical and written assessment

Advanced vehicle body electrics (SRS, comfort and convenience, Multiplex, networks and CAN Bus) – assessed unit AAS2 – practical and written assessment

Advanced vehicle driveline and chassis technology (ABS, ESP, EBD, transmission systems -; automatic and DCS seamless shift technology) – assessed unit AAS8 – practical and written assessment

Alternative fuel vehicles (fuel cell, hybrid, electric operation, safety and diagnosis) – assessed unit AAS3 – written assessment
