COURSE OVERVIEW
The apprenticeship standard involves carrying out skilled work, primarily using timber products, on a construction site, creating and installing building components.
The course is up to 24 months, delivered in the college on block release and in the workplace. It comprises of a college-based training plan, and English and Maths to level 2 (if this is required).
The training plan will cover the following topics with both practical and theoretical elements:

General workplace Health, Safety and Welfare, Effective and Productive Working Practices, Moving, Handling and Storing Resources, Erecting Structural Carcassing Components.

Manufacturing and Installing First & Second Fixing Components
-
Maintaining structural and non-structural Carpentry Work

Setting Up and Using fixed and Transportable Cutting and Shaping Machines
A Site Carpenter will normally work on a building site, or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and fixing building components, from the initial erection of a new building, through to the installation of all necessary fixtures and fittings, as well as a range of repair and maintenance activities.

FURTHER INFORMATION
Apprentices must be in paid employment in the relevant industry to cover the requirements of the standard.
You will be invited to an interview with a member of the course team who will help determine your suitability for the apprenticeship programme. You will need to demonstrate your potential to do well on a demanding apprenticeship, including the potential to succeed in your chosen discipline.

Completing the Level 2 Apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery could allow you to secure permanent employment as a Site Carpenter or Architectural Joiner.
You may want to complete further study. This could include the L3 Advanced Apprenticeship Standard in Carpentry and Joinery.
Achievement of this standard will meet the requirements of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Skilled Worker’; standard.
We will provide further information about the requirements of the apprenticeship programme at interview.
Your progress will be measured and recorded over the 24 months using a range of methods to meet the knowledge, skills and behaviours. We will be using one file and MS Teams:
- Off the job training.
- Practical and theory tests.
- Project work – Work towards an end point portfolio.
- Evidencing your work-based activities, testimonies and professional discussions.
- 12-week reviews
Assessment will be on going during the apprenticeship and at the end you will have the end point assessment. This is made up of a:
- Two-day practical assessment (in college)
- Professional discussion
- Online theory exam
Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths or GCSE’s, grade 4 (or equivalent C) will need to take the Functional Skills lessons and tests for this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.
There is no cost to an apprentice.
If you are an employer employing an apprentice over the age 21 (without an EHCP) then you are likely to pay 5% towards the training cost.
If you are an employer with an Apprenticeship levy (i.e. your payroll exceeds £3 Million) then you will pay in full from your levy account.
You will be required to wear appropriate clothing, PPE and safety on-site boots with steel-toe cap protection when you are in the workshop. As an apprentice we encourage you to wear your typical work-gear from the company that you are employed by when you are on your day release at college.
