COURSE OVERVIEW
The Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying is a hands-on course that will train you to establish yourself with the skills and insight to become a good bricklayer ready for entry level work in the workplace.
You will learn the fundamentals of bricklaying and blockwork and apply more skilled techniques, such as: building solid walling with isolated and attached piers, producing joint finishes, and constructing cavity walling to form masonry structures.
Alongside the development of your technical skills you will learn about health, safety and environmental issues faced on construction sites, and how to communicate with others on the job.

- Our bespoke stand-alone building on the college campus includes a spacious brick workshop.

The following sets out some of the most common entry requirements. However, each application is reviewed on its individual strengths and merits.
You may have previously completed the Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying, but this is not a formal requirement.
GCSEs – If you have not already studied a level one course, you should have achieved GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English with at least a grade 4 in either; and grade 3 in the other to be able to join this course.
A positive attitude, enthusiasm towards learning and good attendance is important.

This qualification helps prepare you for work in the construction industry, with a specific focus on brick and mortar work. Further study options include:
Apprenticeship – Completing the Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying could help you gain an apprenticeship with an employer in the trade. At Chichester College we offer:
- Level 2 Bricklaying Apprenticeship (approx. 30 months)
Further Study -; You could progress to another level 2 on-site construction course.
T Level – These are new technical level 3 qualifications studied for two years. At Chichester College, we offer:
- T Level in On-Site Construction
- T Level in Building Services Engineering
- T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning
The Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying consists of 5 units of learning:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction.
- Principles of building construction, information and communication.
- Building solid walling, isolated and attached piers.
- Interpreting working drawings to set out masonry structures.
- Construct cavity walling forming masonry structures.
All theory learning is designed to enable you to complete your theory and written tests. You will complete these tests on a computer and in a paper-based format. Practical assessments are carried out twice a year during a set period in our workshops.
Course Costs
The City & Guilds Textbook: Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying is also a highly recommended purchase.
You will be supplied with safety glasses, gloves, a face mask and earplugs at the beginning of the course. This Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
There is a £50.00 to cover: Material costs, specialist software licences and other consumables. (Payable online before enrolment. Support with this may be available through applying for bursary on the CCG website.
You will also need to supply your own safety boots and wear appropriate clothes for workshop sessions and site visits.
Course Fees
If you are a student and are under 19 at the beginning of your course, you do not have to pay tuition or exam fees for the majority of courses. If you are 19 or over when you start your course, you will have to contribute to your course fees in line with government guidelines.

The course is timetabled to require attendance over 3 days a week.
The course will include elements of ‘remote-learning’;. We use MS Teams for online learning.
Your learning consists of practical and theory training.
Practical training will be hands on work in the workshop using all the relevant tools and equipment following demonstrations and becoming proficient with tools of the trade.
All practical lessons require the highest standard of behaviour and the use of personal protection equipment.
Theory lessons are also dedicated to teaching you about the important topic of health and safety.
