T Level On-Site Construction (Carpentry & Joinery)

COURSE OVERVIEW

Do you want to work in the professional side of construction?

Site managers, property developers, offsite construction, or specialist technical design.

If so, this is the course for you!

This is an exciting and new qualification for construction students to learn about on-site construction at a level 3 standard.

This course will introduce you to the professional roles in industry whilst specialising in a skilled trade area. (Carpentry and Joinery) This course is an alternative to traditional A level routes that enables you to access Higher Apprenticeships or University

You will cover core content related to the construction sector and choose an occupational specialism – this will be carpentry and joinery.

Ultimately this course is designed for students who want to go on to careers such as: Site managers, property developers, offsite construction, or specialist technical design.

Your learning will cover a broad range of topics and practical skills. The learning is a mixture of practical and theory, so that you can develop your skills in research, problem solving, solution-development, communication and collaboration. You will also further develop your English, Maths and introduce you to sector related Digital skills.

Your practical learning will be designed so that you develop your experience with your occupational specialism.

The College also has a dedicated team of industry placement officers who will help you organise industry placement with employers, so that you can get real-world experience as part of your qualification. It would be beneficial if you can come to us with an employer who will support you on this journey.

Core content

The core content covers a whole range of topics related to the industry.

  • Health and safety in construction
  • Construction science, design, sustainability and measurement principles
  • Construction & the built environment industry
  • Building technology principles
  • Information and data principles
  • Relationship management in construction
  • Digital technology in construction
  • Commercial/business principles in construction

Occupational Specialism

You undertake the following occupational specialism from the on-site construction trades.

Carpentry and Joinery

This trade involves the use of timber in the building industry, from erecting timber frame, roofs and hanging doors through to making doors, windows, and stairs. You will use a range of materials and learn how these are cut, jointed and fixed to construct a variety of products and to develop your methods and techniques. You will learn how to do this safely and meet safe working practices. You will also develop your problem solving and evaluation skills to allow you to learn how to plan, perform and review your work.

Industry Placement

The T Level will include a minimum of 315 hours of learning on industry placement. Our Industry Placement Officers will help you link-up with an employer and complete placements relevant to the qualification. How to apply: Please select the ‘APPLY’ button above for the carpentry and joinery route.

Following your application, a member of the admissions team will review your application with a view to arranging an interview for you with a member of the Construction department.

If you then receive an offer from us and you accept that offer, we will invite you to attend a further one hour session with the one of the T Level study programme leaders in the department. This will help you learn more about the course and the expectations of the T Level.

Entry requirements

  • GCSEs: You will need a minimum of Maths and English Language at grade 5, and 3 GCSEs above 4, ideally including a science or design subject.
  • Age: you will ned to aged 16-18 at the start of your qualification.
  • Those who have completed a Level 2 Diploma in a relevant subject may also apply.
