COURSE OVERVIEW
The ISTD Licentiate qualification builds on the skills learned in the ISTD DDE qualification. Students will study the ISTD syllabus to Advanced 1 level in their chosen genre(s) and combine this with the knowledge they gain as they become experienced dance teachers/practitioners.
Classes take place in the performing arts block on the Chichester College campus. You will be working with students who are studying for the ISTD Level 6 Diploma in Dance Pedagogy.

In order to apply for this course you need to have achieved the following:
- Passed DDE or Associate Diploma in the relevant genre
- Passed the Advanced 1 examination in the relevant genre
If you do not fulfil the entry requirements but have significant knowledge and experience in the relevant genre you can apply for Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning to access this qualification. This scheme takes account of your professional experience and unregulated qualifications to enable you to bypass the usual requirements.
After successful completion of the Licentiate qualification candidates are eligible for full membership of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. You are also eligible to apply to become an ISTD approved DDE tutor. You may wish to progress to the ISTD Fellowship examination, the highest teaching qualification offered by the society, and eventually apply to become an ISTD examiner.
Final assessment is a two part examination, externally assessed by an approved ISTD examiner.
- Part 1- Pathway A (Vocational Specialism): Delivering a 1.5 hour class, to include a balance of syllabus and free work, to a minimum of 4 students at Intermediate or Advanced 1 level.
- Part 1 – Pathway B (Children’s Specialism): Delivering a 1.25 hour class, to include a balance of syllabus and free work, to a minimum of 4 students at Grade 5 or 6 level.
- Part 2: Practical examination during which the candidate must demonstrate practical and theoretical knowledge of syllabus work up to and including Advanced 1. Candidates are also assessed on their ability to discuss the principles of teaching, anatomical understanding, musicality, approach to training the syllabus and ability to create exercises and dances appropriate for different ages.

You will be required to attend one day a week for approximately 3 hours however you are welcome to join any other ISTD timetabled classes including Intermediate and DDE classes, in order to refresh, consolidate and update your knowledge of the syllabus in the genre(s) you are studying at Licentiate level.
