COURSE OVERVIEW
You will learn how to fit frames, stairs and doors in this exciting site carpentry course. This practical-led and intensive course focusses on woodwork activities essential to working as a site carpenter.
You will learn how to cut and fasten objects made of wood, maintain and operate a circular saw and complete practical first-fix and second-fix tasks.
We also cover the key topics of health and safety, communication and working in the construction industry.

The structure of our programmes follows clear educational aims that are expected from the awarding bodies. These are all outlined in the programme specifications which include further details such as the learning outcomes.

You need to have an interest in carpentry.
GCSEs – If you have not already studied a level one course, you should have achieved GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English with at least a grade 4 in either; and grade 3 in the other to be able to join this course.

Apprenticeship – If you have a contract of employment you could become an apprentice. We offer the Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship.
T Level – These are new technical level 3 qualifications studied for two years. At Chichester College, we offer:
- T Level in On-Site Construction
- T Level in Building Services Engineering
- T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning
Alternatively, you may seek entry level employment to develop your work experience in the trade. This could be working in general construction, new build work or refurbishments.
This qualification is designed for those with an interest in site carpentry. You will learn:
- Health, safety and welfare in construction.
- Principles of building, construction, information and communication.
- First fix flooring and roofing.
- First fix frames, partitions and stairs.
- Second fixing operation.
- Carpentry maintenance.
- Set up and operate a circular saw.
You will predominantly be assessed by practical tasks. You will complete 15 practical assessments throughout the year. You will complete 7 theory assessments, which are assessed by multiple choice question papers and online tests.
Course Costs
You will be supplied with safety glasses, gloves, a face mask and earplugs at the beginning of the course. This Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
There is a £50.00 to cover: Material costs, specialist software licences and other consumables. (Payable online before enrolment. Support with this may be available through applying for bursary on the CCG website.)
You will also need to supply your own safety boots and wear appropriate clothes for workshop sessions and site visits.
Course Fees
If you are a student and are under 19 at the beginning of your course, you do not have to pay tuition or exam fees for the majority of courses. If you are 19 or over when you start your course, you will have to contribute to your course fees in line with government guidelines.

The course is timetabled to require attendance over 3 days a week.
The course will include elements of ‘remote-learning’;. We use MS Teams for online learning.
Project-based work forms the main body of your practical training and theoretical knowledge will complement your understanding. Your learning consists of practical training and theory training.
All workshop lessons require the highest standard of behaviour and the use of personal protection equipment. Classes are also dedicated to teaching you about the important topic of health and safety.
