Equine Fences
Year 11 Level 1 and 2 Increased Felxibility Equine students built a show jumping course for a two-day British Eventing (dressage, show jumping and cross-country) show at Coombelands.
The students worked well throughout the morning; with great teamwork skills and listening to the course builder, asking lots of questions. They were all well-behaved, polite and neatly presented.
The group were also allowed to walk the cross-country course, learning new ideas for building a show jumping course, and things that they could use at home to help them with their own horses.
A group of five students worked a full day to put up the poles when the horses knock them down, and assist riders that fell off! These students were paid for their work and fed all day with delicious cakes, sandwiches and drinks.
International Education Week
Chichester College celebrated our diverse college community during International Education Week, with students and staff flocking to Coasters to learn about different cultures, try authentic cuisine, see musical displays and beautiful traditional costume.
On Tuesday, 8th November, students representing 19 countries including Spain, Brazil, Holland, Kuwait, Japan, Korea, Poland and Sweden showed off their culture, food, music and traditions. Our International students worked hard and enjoyed sharing the flavours of their countries, and it paid off, with hundreds of people squeezing into the refectory to get a
look and taste!
Spanish students gave out samples of freshly made tortilla, French and Dutch students had a variety of cheeses to sample, the Eastern European countries gave away delicious morsels of cured meats, Greece had olives and bean salad, China served up a traditional egg fried rice, Kuwait presented juicy dates and many others had a mixture of savoury and sweet treats.
Creative Cookery
On 16th November, a new cookery competition for young cooks was launched in West Sussex. The Create and Cook competition has been run successfully in Hampshire for four years and discovered some fantastic new talented teenage cooks. Now, thanks to the ongoing sponsorship of The Southern Co-operative, the competition is opening to secondary schools across West Sussex, in the hope of finding budding new culinary talent.
The aim of the Create and Cook Competition is to encourage the next generation of cooks to be creative in the kitchen using locally sourced ingredients. Young cooks between the ages of 12-14 years old are challenged to think about sustainability, food miles and seasonality as they research ingredients grown on their doorstep. They then have to create a two-course menu around these key ingredients which should have a flavour of where they live.
For the launch, all food technology teachers from across the county were invited to our Brinsbury Campus to hear how they can enter this exciting new competition. The finals will be held next summer when a new 2012 champion will be announced. To find out more about the competition and to see past winners and their recipes visit www.fit2cook.co.uk/createandcook.
