World Class Apprenticeships
Apprentices
Apprentices talk about their experiences and the benefits of completing an apprenticeship scheme at the Department for Innovations, Universities and Skills Apprenticeships Summit 2008.
What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are a great way to learn and earn at the same time. An apprenticeship is a combination of qualifications which can include: a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), which is based on completing practical tasks in the workplace, a technical certificate which is usually exam based and skills that will help you whilst at work such as in English, Maths, IT, recognised skills Working with Others and Improving Own Learning. The apprenticeship will take you anything from 1 to 4 years to complete depending on the industry you choose.
In some types of businesses such as Engineering and Construction an apprenticeship is one of the main ways to start work. Senior managers in major national firms started life with an apprenticeship.
When would I come to College?
You will need to come to College on a regular basis; the attendance would depend on the apprenticeship you join. You may need to attend once or twice a week, once a fortnight or just come in for specific workshops.
Do I need to be working?
To be an apprentice you will need to work in the industry that you want to complete the apprenticeship in for at least 16 hours per week. Your employer will need to allow you to train at College and be willing to support you at work by allowing you to complete an agreed range of tasks. You should be paid at least £80 per week and if you are 19 or older there are further requirements that your employer should be aware of such as the national minimum wage after the first 12 months of the apprenticeship. We can help you find an employer who takes apprentices.
What do I have to pay?
Apprentices do not have to pay for their programme. The Government funds your training through an organisation called the ‘Learning and Skills Council’ (LSC). The LSC make sure that you are getting the best training and support from your training provider and they require you, your employer and the College to complete some paperwork (do not worry we will help you with all of this).
How do I apply?
If you are interested and would like to speak to a liaison officer ring them on 01243 786321 and ask for the Apprentice Liaison team. You will need to complete an application form. We will then invite you to our next information and assessment session.
