Helping You Succeed
One of our firm beliefs is that everyone should be treated fairly – this means that we will make all kinds of reasonable adjustments to how you go about learning so that no student is disadvantaged, whatever their particular need.
We have a dedicated Additional Support Team to help. They will talk to you and liaise with your lecturers to tailor support programmes for you. This might include in class or out of class support with literacy, numeracy and study skills. To assess the level of support someone should have, we talk to them and assess their needs.
We help students with any disability, including:
- Physical disabilities
- Sensory impairments such as visual or hearing difficulties
- Learning difficulties and disabilities
- Mental health problems
The type of support we offer includes:
- In class support from learning support assistants
- Individual or small group out of class support with qualified Additional Support Tutor
- Use of specialist software and equipment
- Guidance and support from experienced staff
- Support regularly monitored and reviewed in liaison with external agencies
- Communication Support Workers and note takers available for deaf students
If you have dyslexia or other learning difficulties, we have specialist support to help you. Once assessed, you can be supplied with someone to do your reading or writing for you, or we have all kinds of helpful equipment which can make your particular difficulty easier to work with.
If you are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing, we understand the possible problems faced by deaf students and provide lots of different support to help you learn effectively and to get the most out of college life. We can provide British Sign Language support workers, lip speakers and note takers. Our learning support assistants are all trained in basic deaf awareness and some are British Sign Language qualified. We also have several members of full time staff who are very experienced and trained in basic deaf awareness.
We also have a range of expertise and adaptive equipment to help students with hearing or visual impairments as well as special software packages available through the college’s computer network.
We know that some students need special arrangements when taking examinations and, in conjunction with examining board guidelines, we can help with examination support.
The college is well served with facilities such as ramps, hoists, lifts and specialist toilets and we have dedicated, accessible parking and wheelchair access where appropriate. If wheelchair access isn’t available, we can relocate classes.
The Additional Support Team is always keen to talk to any student thinking of coming to Chichester College. You are very welcome to come and visit the college before your interview so that you can meet staff and take a look at our facilities.
