Introduction to TEFL

Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)

The University of Cambridge CELTA provides an initial teacher training qualification in teaching EFL.  It is aimed at people with no previous teaching experience, or at experienced teachers with no experience of TEFL.

The course has full (University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations Teaching Awards) status.  As such, it has worldwide recognition and acceptance.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be at least 19 years old, have at least two 'A' levels or equivalent and preferably a degree.  Applicants whose first language is not English must have a command of spoken and written English equivalent to that of an educated native speaker.

The Certificate is awarded to candidates who successfully fulfil the requirements of the course.  It is awarded on the basis of continuous assessment throughout the course and is based mainly on teaching practice, written work and course participation.  There is no written examination. 

Application Procedure and Payment of Fees

If you wish to apply for the course, please complete the application form and accompanying writing task. You will find details of these with the information sheet below.

If you are short-listed, you will be required to attend an interview.  If you are offered a place on the course and decide to accept, you will be required to confirm your acceptance in writing and send a £100 deposit.  This deposit is non-refundable.  The balance of fees is due no later than six weeks before the start of the course.  Refunds of fees cannot be given for cancellations made within 10 working days of the course start date. Refunds cannot be made once a course has started.  The information in this leaflet is correct at the time of printing; Chichester College reserves the right to make amendments where necessary.
