Always there for you
When you join a large, bustling college such as ours, it can seem daunting. Not only do you have your studies to settle into, you want to make new friends and explore all that this vibrant college has to offer you, whatever your age.
That’s where the Students’ Union comes in. At the Chichester campus we are right at the heart of the college and open for you Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 5.00pm, we can help with almost any query or problem.
The current union president, James Collins who, studied Sports Science here, together with the Student Activities Co-ordinator, Jamie Bunce, are enthusiastic and interested in helping all our students. Their office, whilst busy and positively stuffed with up to the minute information leaflets on a whole host of subjects, can also be a private sanctuary where you can talk to them about anything to do with college life, your studies or your relationships with others.
James says “We are always happy to speak confidentially and often help to mediate where there are issues, whether it's with tutors, other students or sometimes outside bodies such as the police or local authority. We get involved with the nitty gritty of people’s student lives as well as the fun things
“The Student Union also takes part in the College’s Governing Body – there are two student governors – which ensures that we are at the heart of decision making and policy setting. We like to know what’s going on so that we can help and advise students accordingly.”
James makes sure he attends national Students’ Union conferences and is proud to say that the Students’ Union at Chichester is one of the most active ones of all the further education colleges in this country.
“If you have a complaint, or want to make a suggestion, take part in a fun activity, or go on a trip – we’ve been to some pretty exciting places both here and abroad – have someone sit with you as you talk to your tutor or another student, or just pick up some leaflets, we can always help and are always happy to meet with you,” James explains.
“We like to get involved with the local community and to help integrate our many international students into student life, we organise social events so that people who are far from home can make new friends.
“We think we’ve got it pretty much right – but we are always open to suggestions about how we can improve our service to students!”
